Johnson brought charges against William Smith of “unchristian like conduct in speaking disrespectfully of President Joseph Smith Junr. and the revelations & commandments given through him” and “for attempting to inflict personal violence” on him. These charges arose from William Smith’s assault on JS two weeks earlier. Six of the seven most senior members of the Quorum of the Twelve sat on this high council to consider the charges against their fellow quorum member.
