Biography
23 Dec. 1816–10 Feb. 1885. Farmer, excise officer, secretary, clerk. Born in Leek, Staffordshire, England. Son of Thomas Bullock and Mary Hall. Married Henrietta Rushton, 25 June 1838. Moved to Ardee, Co. Louth, Ireland, Nov. 1839; to Isle of Anglesey, Aug. 1840; and back to Leek, Nov. 1841. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by William Knight, 20 Nov. 1841, in Leek. Ordained a priest by Alfred Cordon, 28 Apr. 1842. Ordained an elder by James Riley and Robert Crooks, 3 July 1842. Emigrated from England, 8 Mar. 1843; arrived in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, 31 May 1843. Participated in plural marriage during JS’s lifetime. Served as scribe to JS, from 1843 until death of JS. Served as clerk of steamboat Maid of Iowa, beginning 1 May 1844. Made secretary of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge, 23 June 1844. Ordained a seventy by Joseph Young, 12 Jan. 1845; appointed president of Twenty-Seventh Quorum of the Seventy, 1 June 1845. Moved to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), 1846. Served as clerk for Brigham Young pioneer company during migration to Salt Lake Valley, summer 1847. Returned to Winter Quarters, fall 1847; arrived back in Salt Lake Valley, Sept. 1848. Recorder for Salt Lake Co., Utah Territory, 1848–1856. Served as clerk to church historian and recorder. First proofreader for Deseret News, 1850. Appointed clerk of House of Representatives for provisional state of Deseret, 1850. Served mission to England, Aug. 1856–June 1858. Moved to Wanship, Summit Co., Utah Territory, 1868, where he served as clerk of probate court and recorder of Summit Co. Moved to Coalville, Summit Co., before June 1870, where he died.
