Biography

14 Sept. 1810–3 Dec. 1890. Tailor, carpenter, farmer, joiner. Born in Hawley, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts. Son of Edward Darby and Ruth Phoebe Hitchcock. Moved to Ohio, by 1834. Married Ruhamah Burnham Knowlton, 10 Aug. 1834, in Carthage, Hamilton Co., Ohio. Moved to Hancock Co., Illinois, soon thereafter. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, early 1840, in Hancock Co. Appointed aide-de-camp in Nauvoo Legion, 13 Nov. 1841. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., by 1842. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Traveled to Missouri, July 1842, to ask Governor Thomas Reynolds to remit arrest warrant for JS. While in hiding with JS, served as a scribe for JS’s journal, Aug. 1842. Ordained a seventy. Moved to Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, by 1850; to Ohio, by late 1850; to Chicago, by 1855; and to Williams Co., Ohio, by 1860. Fought in Civil War. Moved to Le Sueur, Le Sueur Co., Minnesota, 1872. Died in Le Sueur.
