Summary

Located in northeast region of U.S. Area settled by Dutch traders, 1620s; later governed by Britain, 1664–1776. Admitted to U.S. as state, 1788. Population in 1810 about 1,000,000; in 1820 about 1,400,000; in 1830 about 1,900,000; and in 1840 about 2,400,000. New York City was major port of European trade and immigration. Canals, particularly Erie Canal (completed 1825), further escalated inland mercantilism. Joseph Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith family lived in Palmyra and Manchester areas, 1817–1830. Western New York known as “burned-over district” during JS’s early life because of numerous religious revivals. JS married Emma Hale in South Bainbridge (now Afton), 1827. Book of Mormon published in Palmyra, 1830. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized in Fayette, 1830. In 1830, three main branches of church located in townships of Fayette, Manchester, and Colesville. JS and most Latter-day Saint residents emigrated to Ohio, 1831. JS traveled through New York, 1832, 1833, 1834, 1836, and 1837. JS dictated dozens of revelations in New York. Several Latter-day Saint congregations established in New York, 1830s and 1840s.
