20 May 1794–Nov. 20, 1880. Blacksmith, farmer, lumberman, sawmill operator. Born in Argyle, Washington Co., New York. Son of Chris John Burgess and Hannah Newland. Married Violate Stockwell, 8 Oct. 1812. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2 Dec. 1832, in Bolton, Warren Co., New York. Left New York for Missouri, 5 Sept. 1833. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, ca. July 1834. Ordained an elder, 7 Mar. 1835. Ordained a high priest, Jan. 1837. Left Kirtland for Illinois, Mar. 1838. Resided in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, 1840. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, spring 1841. Left Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), for Salt Lake Valley with Heber C. Kimball pioneer company, 7 June 1848; arrived 24 Sept. 1848. Resided in Salt Lake City Sixteenth Ward. Moved to Lehi, Utah Co., Utah Territory, by 1853. Established lumber business with sons near Park City, Summit Co., Utah Territory. Appointed to serve mission to southern Utah Territory, 1861, and moved to St. George, Washington Co., Utah Territory. Moved to Pine Valley, Washington Co., to build and operate a sawmill, spring 1862. Died in Pine Valley.
