Biography

24 Mar. 1793–6 Feb. 1866. Stonemason, carpenter, musician. Born in Greenfield, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts. Son of Ebenezer Billings and Esther Joyce. Moved to Mentor, Geauga Co., Ohio, by 1817. Married Diantha Morley, 16 Feb. 1817, in Geauga Co. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., by 1820. Moved back to Mentor, 1827. Affiliated with Campbellite faith. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 15 Nov. 1830, in Kirtland. Ordained a deacon, by Oct. 1831. Moved to Jackson Co., Missouri, 1832. Ordained an elder by Thomas B. Marsh, 10 Mar. 1832, in Jackson Co. Moved to Clay Co., Missouri, 1833. Moved back to Kirtland, ca. 1835. Labored on Kirtland temple. Moved to Caldwell Co., Missouri, by 1837. Ordained a high priest by Edward Partridge and Isaac Morley, 1 Aug. 1837, in Caldwell Co. Served as counselor to Bishop Edward Partridge, 1837–1840, in Missouri and Illinois. Fought in skirmish at Crooked River, 1838. Moved to Lima, Adams Co., Illinois, 1838. Moved to Yelrome (Morley’s Settlement, later in Tioga), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Member of Yelrome high council, 1839–1845. Appointed colonel in Nauvoo Legion, 1841. Appointed warden of Department of Music for University of Nauvoo, 1842. Served mission to New England, 1842. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., 1845. Migrated to what became Utah Territory, 1848; settled in Sessions Settlement (later Bountiful, Davis Co.). Member of Salt Lake stake high council, 1849. Moved to Manti (later in Sanpete Co., Utah Territory), 1849. Counselor in Sanpete stake presidency, 1851. Moved to Provo, Utah Co., Utah Territory, ca. 1864. Died in Provo.
