Grover, Thomas
Biography
22 July 1807–20 Feb. 1886. Farmer, boat operator. Born at Whitehall, Washington Co., New York. Son of Thomas Grover and Polly Spaulding. Married first Caroline Whiting of Whitehall, 1828. Became a Methodist preacher, by 1834. Moved to Freedom, Cattaraugus Co., New York, by 1834. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Warren A. Cowdery, Sept. 1834, at Freedom. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1835. Ordained an elder, 2 Jan. 1836. Appointed to Kirtland high council, 1836. Removed his family to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, where he served on high council, 1837. Member of committee at Far West to supervise removal of Latter-day Saints from Missouri, Jan. 1839. Moved to Adams Co., Illinois, by 7 May 1839. Located at Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Appointed to Nauvoo high council, 1839. Member of Nauvoo Legion, 1841. Married second Caroline Nickerson Hubbard, 20 Feb. 1841, in Nauvoo. Served three short missions during early 1840s. Moved to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), winter 1846–1847. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, Oct. 1847; settled at Deuel Creek (later in Centerville), Davis Co., Utah Territory. Collected tithing in California, winter 1848–1849. Moved to Farmington, Davis Co., 1849. Moved to Kanesville (later Council Bluffs), Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, 1850; returned to Farmington, 1853. Member of Davis Co. high council. Served in Utah territorial legislature. Probate judge in Davis Co. Served mission to eastern U.S., 1874–1875. Died at Farmington.
