Biography
23 Apr. 1813–3 June 1861. Lawyer, politician. Born at Brandon, Rutland Co., Vermont. Son of Stephen Arnold Douglass and Sarah Fisk. Moved to Ontario Co., New York, 1830. Moved to Jacksonville, Morgan Co., Illinois, 1833. Served as attorney general of Illinois, 1835–1836. Served as state representative, 1836–1841; moved to Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois, 1837. Served as registrar of land office, 1837, at Springfield. Served as Illinois secretary of state, 1840–1841, at Springfield. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, 1841. Served as state supreme court justice, 1841–1842. Served as U.S. representative, 1843–1847. Part of peace commission sent with John J. Hardin to end hostilities in Hancock Co., Illinois, Sept. 1845. Married first Martha Denny Martin, 1847, at Rockingham Co., North Carolina. Moved to Chicago, 1847. Served as U.S. senator, 1847–1861. Married second Adèle Cutts, 20 Nov. 1856, at Washington DC. Died at Chicago.
