Biography

14 Apr. 1773–13 Aug. 1854. Farmer. Born at Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania. Son of Peter Whitmer and likely Maria Salome. Member of Presbyterian church. Married Mary Musselman, before 1798, in Pennsylvania. Lived in Lebanon Township, Dauphin Co., by 1800. Moved to Fayette, Seneca Co., New York, by 1809. Member of German Reformed Church. Served as overseer of highways, 1826–1827, in Fayette. Boarded JS and family, June 1829, in Fayette. Organizational meeting for Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held at his home, 6 Apr. 1830. First public church service held at his home, 11 Apr. 1830. Baptized into church by Oliver Cowdery, 18 Apr. 1830, in Seneca Lake, Seneca Co., New York. Moved to area near Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1831; settled in Hiram, Portage Co., Ohio. Moved to Jackson Co., Missouri, 1832; to Clay Co., Missouri, ca. late 1833; to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, by 1838; and to Richmond, Ray Co., Missouri, 1838. Disaffected from church. Died in Richmond.
