Biography
5 Feb. 1800–14 Dec. 1877. Cigar manufacturer. Born in Philadelphia. Son of Peter Hess and Fanny. Married Maria Leidy, 21 Dec. 1823, in Philadelphia. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6 Aug. 1842. Ordained an elder and appointed to preside over Philadelphia branch, 4 Sept. 1842. Ordained a high priest by Hyrum Smith and William Law, 15 Oct. 1842, in Philadelphia. Appointed to serve mission in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, Apr. 1843. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, ca. Oct. 1843. Returned to Philadelphia; excommunicated, Sept. 1846. Affiliated with James J. Strang’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Died in Philadelphia.
