Hancock, Levi Ward
Biography
7 Apr. 1803–10 June 1882. Born at Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts. Son of Thomas Hancock III and Amy Ward. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 16 Nov. 1830, at Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio. Married Clarissa Reed, 20 Mar. 1831. Served mission to Missouri with Zebedee Coltrin, summer 1831. Appointed to serve mission to Missouri, Ohio, and Virginia, Jan. 1832. Attended organizational meeting of School of the Prophets, 22–23 Jan. 1833, in Kirtland. Participated in Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri, 1834. Ordained a seventy, 28 Feb. 1835; appointed a president of the Seventy shortly after. Moved to Missouri, 1838. Member of committee at Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, to supervise removal of Latter-day Saints from Missouri, Jan. 1839. Located at Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Enlisted in Mormon Battalion at what became Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa Territory; served 1846–1847. Only general authority of church on march; served as unofficial chaplain for battalion. Arrived in Salt Lake Valley, 1847. Member of Utah territorial legislature for three terms, beginning in 1851. Ordained a patriarch, 1872. Died at Washington, Washington Co., Utah Territory.
