Biography

16 Jan. 1806–14 Nov. 1885. Farmer, teacher, carpenter, miner, clerk, policeman, probate judge. Born at Florence, Oneida Co., New York. Son of Moses Holbrook and Hannah Lucretia Morton. Moved to Worcester Co., Massachusetts, June 1813. Married first Nancy Lampson, 30 Dec. 1830, at Western, Worcester Co. Moved to Wethersfield, Genesee Co., New York, Feb. 1831. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Leonard C. Rich, 6 Jan. 1833, at Warsaw, Genesee Co., and ordained a teacher, 7 Jan. 1833. Ordained an elder by Reynolds Cahoon, 12 Apr. 1833. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, Apr. 1834. Participated in Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri, 1834. Lived at Clay Co. and Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1836–1839. Ordained a seventy by Levi Hancock, 19 May 1838, in Far West, Caldwell Co. Commissioned a first lieutenant in Missouri state militia. Participated in Battle of Crooked River, near Ray Co., Missouri, 25 Oct. 1838. Moved to Ramus (later Webster), Hancock Co., Illinois, by 1840. First counselor to President Joel Hills Johnson in Ramus stake, Ramus, 1840. Commissioned a captain in Illinois militia, 6 Apr. 1841. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., 1842. Ordained a high priest in Nauvoo. Married second Hannah Flint, 1 Jan. 1843, in Nauvoo. Arrived in Salt Lake Valley, 20 Sept. 1848. Moved to Bountiful, Davis Co., Utah Territory, spring 1850. Served as Davis Co. judge, 1851–1859. Elected to Utah territorial legislature, 1857 and 1859. Served as a bishop’s counselor. Died at Bountiful.
