21 Feb. 1816–1 Dec. 1856. Farmer. Born in Union, Broome Co., New York. Son of Joshua Grant and Athalia Howard. Lived in Springwater, Ontario Co., New York, 1820. Lived in Naples, Ontario Co., 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John F. Boynton, 21 Mar. 1833. Participated in Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri, 1834. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1834. Ordained an elder, 1834. Labored on Kirtland temple, 1835–1836. Ordained a seventy by JS, 28 Feb. 1835, in Kirtland. Served a mission with Harvey Stanley, 1835. Served missions to New York, 13 Apr. 1836–6 Mar. 1837, and to North Carolina, June 1837. Moved to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, 9 Oct.–12 Nov. 1838. Expelled from Missouri; moved with father’s family to Knox Co., Illinois, 25 Dec. 1838. Appointed to serve mission to Virginia and North Carolina. Presided over branch in Philadelphia, June 1843–Mar. 1844. Admitted to Council of Fifty, 25 Apr. 1844. Began serving mission, 9 May 1844, with Wilford Woodruff and George A. Smith; recalled to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, before June 1844. Married Caroline Van Dyke, 2 July 1844, in Nauvoo. Returned to Philadelphia and presided over church there, July 1844–May 1845. Moved to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), Feb. 1846. Appointed captain of company of emigrating Latter-day Saints and moved to Salt Lake City, June–Oct. 1847. Elected speaker of the house in Utah territorial legislature, 13 Dec. 1852, in Salt Lake City. Ordained an apostle, 1854, in Salt Lake City. Served as second counselor to Brigham Young in First Presidency, 1854–1856. Died in Salt Lake City.
