Married Mary Minerva Snow, 16 Mar. 1833, in St. Johnsbury. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Orson Pratt, 18 June 1833. Moved near Liberty, Clay Co., Missouri, 1834. Served mission to Illinois with Caleb Baldwin, 1836. Ordained an elder, 18 Feb. 1836, in Flat Branch, Sangamon Co., Illinois. Moved to Caldwell Co., Missouri, fall 1836. Arraigned during conflict in Missouri, Nov. 1838. Ordained a seventy by JS and Sidney Rigdon, 19 Dec. 1838. Served mission to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, and Clay Co., ca. 1839. Moved to Lee Co., Iowa Territory, by 1840. Served mission to La Porte, La Porte Co., Indiana, 1841. Served mission to New England, June 1843–May 1844. Ordained as president of Fourth Quorum of the Seventy, Oct. 1844, in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, arriving fall 1847. Served missions to England, 1850–ca. 1853, 1859–1861. Served colonizing mission to southern Utah Territory, 1861, where he helped settle city of St. George, Washington Co., Utah Territory. Member of Washington Co. court. Represented Washington Co. and Kane Co., Utah Territory, in Utah territorial House of Representatives, 1864–1868, 1873–1874. Moved to Bellevue, Kane Co., by 1880. Died in Provo.
