Watt, George Darling
Biography
16 Jan. 1815–24 Oct. 1881. Stenographer, reporter, merchant, clerk, farmer. Born in Manchester, Lancashire, England. Son of James Watt and Mary Ann Wood. Moved to Scotland, before 1829; returned to England, 1829. Married Mary Gregson, 13 June 1835, in Preston, Lancashire. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Heber C. Kimball, 30 July 1837, in Preston. Ordained a high priest, 6 Apr. 1841, in Manchester. Served as president of church conference in Edinburgh, Apr. 1841. Emigrated from England, 17 Sept. 1842; arrived in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by spring 1843. Taught shorthand and reported speeches in Nauvoo. Made stenographic report of trial for those indicted for murdering JS and Hyrum Smith, May 1845. Served mission to England, 1846–1850. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, 1851. Employed as reporter for Deseret News, 1851–1853. Served in Utah territorial legislature, 1852–1854. Clerk for Brigham Young, 1853–1868. Produced journal of speeches of church leaders published under title Journal of Discourses. Moved to Kaysville, Davis Co., Utah Territory, by 1870. Excommunicated for his association with Godbeite Church of Zion, 3 May 1874. Died in Kaysville.
