Howe, Eber Dudley

9 June 1798–10 Nov. 1885. Newspaper editor and publisher, farmer, wool manufacturer. Born at Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., New York. Son of Samuel William Howe and Mabel Dudley. Moved with family to Ovid, Seneca Co., New York, 1804. Located at Niagara District (later in Ontario), Upper Canada, 1811. Enlisted with the New York Volunteers in War of 1812 at Batavia, Genesee Co., New York, 1814. Worked for Buffalo Gazette, ca. 1816, at Buffalo, Erie Co., New York. Assisted in publishing Chautauqua Gazette, 1817–1818, at Fredonia, Chautauque Co., New York. Worked for Erie Gazette, Sept. 1817, at Erie, Erie Co., Pennsylvania. Cofounded and published Cleveland Herald, 1819–1821, at Cleveland. Moved to Painesville, Geauga Co., Ohio, spring 1822; founded and published Painesville Telegraph, beginning 1822. Married Sophia Hull of Clarence, Erie Co., June 1823. An abolitionist, his house was a station on the Underground Railroad to assist runaway slaves. Published anti-Mormon articles in Painesville Telegraph from 1831 until 1835, when he sold paper to his brother Asahel Howe. Published anti-Mormon book Mormonism Unvailed, 1834; with Doctor Philastus Hurlbut, advanced the Rigdon-Spaulding theory of the origin of the Book of Mormon. Involved in agriculture, 1840, at Concord Township, Lake Co., Ohio. Died at Painesville.
