28 May 1795–26 Oct. 1872. Farmer, carpenter. Born in Manlius, Onondaga Co., New York. Son of Amos Stanton and Elizabeth Wyman. Moved to Pompey, Onondaga Co., by 1800. Married Clarinda Graves, 16 Mar. 1816. Moved to Mayfield, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, by 1820. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, by 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Parley P. Pratt, 3 Nov. 1830, in Kirtland. Ordained a priest by Lyman Wight, Jan. 1831, in Kirtland; an elder by JS, 6 June 1831, in Kirtland; and a high priest by Oliver Cowdery, 25 Oct. 1831, in Orange, Cuyahoga Co. Appointed to serve mission with Seymour Brunson, Jan. 1832. Moved to Jackson Co., Missouri, 1832. Recommended to be a counselor in a bishopric in Independence, Jackson Co., Missouri, by JS and other church leaders, 25 June 1833. Appointed to watch over branch “no. 2” in Independence, 11 Sept. 1833. Appointed to serve mission with Elias Eams, 6 Aug. 1834, at Clay Co., Missouri. Present at high council meeting, 10 Aug. 1835, in Kirtland. Served as acting counselor in Zion bishopric at general assembly of church, 17 Aug. 1835, in Kirtland. Moved to Daviess Co., Missouri, by 1838. Appointed member of high council at Adam-ondi-Ahman, Daviess Co., 28 June 1838. Expelled from Missouri; moved to Illinois, 1839. Appointed member of high council at Lima, Adams Co., Illinois, 11 June 1843. Appointed by Brigham Young to go abroad and preside over branches of church, 8 Oct. 1844. Moved to Kanesville (later Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co.), Iowa Territory, 1846; to Springville, Utah Co., Utah Territory, 1852; and to Fairfield, Cedar Co., Utah Territory, by 1860. Appointed by Brigham Young to help settle St. George, Washington Co., Utah Territory, 1861. Moved to Panaca, Washington Co. (later in Nevada), 1864. Buried in Panaca Cemetery.
