7 Sept. 1821–7 Dec. 1884. Lawyer, banker, politician, judge. Born in Tate Township, Clermont Co., Ohio. Son of Elias Higbee and Sarah Elizabeth Ward. Lived in Fulton, Hamilton Co., Ohio, 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1832. Moved to Jackson Co., Missouri, 1833; to Clay Co., Missouri, 1833; and to what became Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1836. Located at Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, 1839. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois. Appointed aide-de-camp to major general John C. Bennett in Nauvoo Legion, Nov. 1841. Excommunicated, 24 May 1842, in Nauvoo. Publisher of Nauvoo Expositor, 1844. Moved to Griggsville, Pike Co., Illinois, 1844. Moved to Pittsfield, Pike Co., 1847. Married Julia M. White, 14 Feb. 1854, in Adams Co. Served in Illinois legislature, 1854. Served as state senator, 1858–1861. Died in Pittsfield.
