Biography
12 Sept. 1788–4 Mar. 1866. Teacher, minister, magazine publisher, college president. Born near Ballymena, Co. Antrim, Ireland. Son of Thomas Campbell and Jane Corneigle. Raised Presbyterian. Moved to Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, 1808. Immigrated to Buffalo Township, Washington Co., Pennsylvania, 1809. Married first Margaret Brown, 12 Mar. 1811, in Washington Co. Joined his father in leading reformed Baptist (later Disciples of Christ or Campbellite) movement and in founding Christian Association of Washington, in Washington, Washington Co. “Licensed” to preach at meeting where Christian Association became a congregationally governed church, 4 May 1811. Ordained a minister by his father, 1 Jan. 1812, in Washington, and became main leader of Campbellite movement shortly after. United with Barton W. Stone’s Christian movement, 1832. Founded and taught at Buffalo Seminary, 1818–1823, in Buffalo Township. Moved to Brooke Co., Virginia (later in West Virginia), 1823. Published monthly magazine Christian Baptist (titled Millennial Harbinger after 1830), 1823–1863. Published translation of New Testament titled The Living Oracles, 1826. Married second Selina Huntington Bakewell, 31 July 1828, in Brooke Co. Served on judiciary committee of Virginia constitutional convention, 1829. Founder and president of Bethany College, 1840–1866, in Bethany, Brooke Co. Died in Bethany.
