identifies errors found in Documents, Volume 1: July
1828–June 1831. Minor errors, such as in the format of source
citations, are not reported. The errors reported here occur in all
printings of the volume and have been corrected in the transcripts,
annotation, and reference material presented on this site. This sheet
will be updated as additional errors are found. Please report additional
errors by emailing [email protected].
Page 8, fourth line from bottom. “Thou do this” should
not have a new paragraph break; this line should be run in with the
previous paragraph.
Page 129, note 94. Pratt’s Remarkable
Visions is not found in H1.
Page 144, note 173. William Smith was ordained a teacher
on 5 October 1831, not 1830. Additionally, the last sentence should read
“Both certificates specified that Whitmer was an ‘Elder.’” The second
source cited should be replaced with “License for William Smith, 5 Oct.
1831, CCLA.”
Page 350, line 5 of transcript: Add comma after “Wm.
Hale’s”: “Pennsylvania near a Wm. Hale’s, supposed to be a valuable mine
of either”.
Page 352. Signatures should be rendered in small
caps.
Page 356. Photo misidentified as Charles Anthon. The individual pictured is actually Charles Anthon's brother, Rev. Dr. Henry Anthon.
Page 369, line 16. Change “Whitmer” to “David
Whitmer.”

391–539. A number of updates and changes have been made to the reference
material. The updates correct factual errors, add additional
information, and remove information that, while possibly accurate, could
not be documented in primary sources or the most reliable secondary
sources. Because the reference material supports all published volumes
and all documents published on the website, the Smith Papers staff will
not keep a record of the specific changes made to each entry published
in Documents, Volume 1. Readers should refer to the
Reference section of the Joseph Smith Papers website to find the
corrected and updated information.
